Expose the Paradigmatic Flaws: Happy vs. WCS

“Save the elephants – and then you save yourself” – Mark Shand.

Dear Climate Healer,

This week, the Guardian published its “carbon bomb” analysis to make us feel outraged at the attitudes of the fossil fuel CEOs and their enablers in governments throughout the world, while distracting us from all other outrages that make the current system so utterly unsustainable.

Please ask why did the Guardian analysis stop with fossil fuel CEOs and not tell us about, for example:

1) the planned obsolescence in smartphone products that forces people to chuck their perfectly good smartphones once the battery stops working and get newer smartphones (I was painfully reminded of this when my smartphone battery died last week, taking a whole host of my messages to the big blue message heaven yonder),

2) the UN serving meat, fish, dairy and eggs at climate change conferences, the very same UN spearheaded by Antonio Guterres who appears to be outraged by fossil fuel CEOs in the Guardian article and who chartered Burger King to serve “food” at the UN Climate Change meeting, COP25, in Madrid in 2019 (see photo above),

3) the opulence of UN climate change conferences, including fancy ticker tapes listing corporate sponsors, so that attendees can drop all pretense of seriousness in addressing climate change,

4) the entire nation state method of global governance in which the global North siphons an estimated $2-3 Trillion worth of resources from the global South annually through the fiat currency mechanism, including kidnapping Happy the elephant from her Thai home and exhibiting her in the Bronx zoo, and

5) the war in Ukraine, which is wreaking havoc in the global food supply chain leading to starvation in Yemen, Kenya and the global South, even as President Biden institutes a “Discover Dairy” program in US schools to promote increased consumption of disease promoting dairy products among school children to prop up the tanking US dairy industry.

That’s just a short list of other recent outrages. I wonder what it will take for the mainstream media to tell us that the entire system based on competition and one-upmanship where the purpose of humanity is to amuse itself needs to be discarded and replaced with a system based on collaboration and compassion where the purpose of humanity is to harmonize and maintain the ecosystems of the planet. In other words, a system in which we actually contribute more to the planet than take from it in order to ensure our survival as a species.

Even George Monbiot wrote that those of us who work on climate change while bypassing these recalcitrant governments and sclerotic institutions are more dangerous than climate deniers.

Seriously? Talk about toeing the party line.

The mainstream media wants us to stop poking around examining the rotten foundations of the current system, but instead focus just on tweaking its levers.

Please, can we not walk and chew gum at the same time?

As Thomas Kuhn wrote, we have a duty to keep pointing out the paradigmatic flaws of our era, that “Greed is Good” and “Might is Right” can never be the proper foundations of a sustainable system. The young artist, Daniel Greenway, illustrated what it would feel like if the shoe was on the other foot and he makes a compelling case on the cruelty and absurdity of it all.

Instead, imagine that every human child has a fundamental birthright to be brought up in a society that is routinely kind to all life, in a Vegan World that our granddaughter has demanded by 2026. A world in which Happy, the Elephant, and all her animal friends are recognized as persons who deserve to live free of gratuitous abuse at the hands of a few disturbed humans.

Clearly, the animal use industry is scared of this Non-human Rights Project lawsuit and has been filing amici brief by the dozens to have it thrown out. And yet, the lawsuit persists and oral arguments are happening this week. May Happy vs. WCS join the pantheons of other paradigm shifting lawsuits such as Loving vs. Virginia, and Obergefell vs. Hodges and enter the history books.

Let’s make this greatest transformation in human history happen sooner rather than later.

Eat plants.
Plant trees.
Love animals.
Heal the planet.

It’s that simple.

All the best,
