Dear Climate Healers,
“You can count on Americans to do the right thing, after they have exhausted every other alternative” – Winston Churchill.
Dear Climate Healers,
V-COP11 over the weekend was one of the most educational convergences that I have ever attended. I learned a lot from every presenter and the attendees who graced it. From John Doyle’s prediction that there will be ZERO human beings left on the planet in 15 years if we continue on our present course (which makes sense if we nearly ZERO out wild vertebrates by 2026 in 4 years) to Alison Hamje’s excellent insights into the community kitchens of Peru, there was something I learned at every one of the V-COP11 sessions.
If you missed any of the sessions, please go through the recorded videos of the sessions on our Trello board here. The text of John’s passionate speech as well as the slide deck of Dr. Michael Klaper’s excellent presentation and the text of his simple prescription for healthy living are attached to the respective Trello cards. In case you have never used Trello before, here is a short video tutorial on how to navigate the V-COP Trello board.
Beyond a certain point, Nature tends to amplify what we, humans seek. We, humans have been HEATing the climate for nearly 10,000 years by raising and killing animals and burning down forests. For most of that time, Nature kept the temperature on Earth constant, thereby enabling the agricultural revolution. During the latter half of the 20th century, the planet’s temperature started to rise and it is now on the cusp of increasing uncontrollably.
We have known for at least three decades that we are overheating the Earth’s climate. Yet we have continued to pour greenhouse gases into the atmosphere to grow our consumer economy, including razing down forests for more meat and dairy production. Through our actions, we have been indicating to Nature that we would like the Earth to heat up even more.
Nature is now obliging us and even amplifying our Climate HEATing endeavors. Nature has either triggered or is on the verge of triggering at least six different nonlinear positive feedback loops that can cause runaway climate change, with another 50 more to come. With complex nonlinear feedback systems, it is difficult to predict the tipping points until it is too late. This is why scientists estimate ranges for these tipping points and beseech humanity not to transgress those ranges.
But humanity has transgressed or nearly transgressed six of those ranges. Yet, world leaders carry on business-as-usual at the Coca-Cola sponsored UN COP-27 meeting, as they corral pesky activists in distant exclusion zones and continue to serve meat, dairy, fish and eggs in the cafeterias, while arriving in private jets and gas guzzling limousines.
As James Cromwell said in his interview with Jane Velez-Mitchell on the indispensable Vegan media platform, UnchainedTV,
“It’s not as though they’re trying to kill us. They just don’t care whether we die or not.”
So, what can we, the people, do?
To paraphrase Toni Morrison, “This is precisely the time when activists go to work. There is no time for despair, no place for self-pity, no need for silence, no room for fear. We speak, we write, we act. That is how civilizations heal.”
The key point I would like to highlight is that we need to act, not merely plead with our leaders to act. While individual change is not enough and only social change can solve climate change, such social change must come from the concerted actions of large numbers of individuals before governments can find the courage to act.
Mahatma Gandhi pleaded with the British to leave India, but he also understood that in the face of intractable colonial oppression, social change can only be effected when large numbers of people undergo the same individual change that upsets the status quo. Therefore, he persuaded the people of India to change their clothes and thus dissolved the British textile industry first before the colonial government acted.
We will likewise dissolve the animal-exploiting, disease-promoting, planet-destroying global food system of today with the Food Healers initiative. By making healthy, whole-foods, plant-based Universal vegan meals a basic human right, we will make the profit-driven food system irrelevant, while simultaneously healing our fellow human beings. We will not stand idly by begging governments to act as this system feeds precious grains to enslaved animals, while our fellow humans starve or sicken to death all around us.
This is not a revolution, but a dissolution in a sea of LOVE. Climate change is not a curse, but a signal from Nature to transform our fear-based, violent Climate HEATing civilization into a love-based, nonviolent Climate Healing civilization.
This transformation is not a spectator event. Social media likes alone won’t make it happen. Please join us at Food Healers and get involved today.
