Dear Climate Healers,

Suddenly, everyone is asking,
“Will AI kill us all off within the next 6 months to 10 years?”

AI technologist Jacob Coxon’s tweet announcing his resignation from Anthropic has been viewed over 170 million times. He then posted the following tweet that has the world all atwitter:

“The people building AI earnestly believe it could kill us all by the end of the decade. This is not a marketing stunt. If anything, many executives and senior researchers will couch their phrasing in the press to sound sensible – but I hear the same people express their fear privately. No other human activity poses this level of danger.”

In July 2026, a chorus of AI technologists, including Dario Amodei, the CEO of Anthropic, Ilya Sutskever, the CEO of Safe SuperIntelligence, Mark Chen, the Chief Research Officer of Open AI, and Jasjeet Sekhon, the Chief Strategy Officer of Google DeepMind, signed an open letter to the US Government,

“AI could help create a dramatically better future, but that outcome is not guaranteed. The world’s leading AI companies believe they could be close to automating AI research. It is hard to predict exactly how much this will accelerate AI progress, but there is a real risk that capability development rapidly accelerates beyond our ability to understand or control the resulting systems.

To realize AI’s potential, industry, government, and society at large may need the option to buy time to address emerging risks, develop security measures, and strengthen oversight. But each company—and country—is under intense competitive pressure not to unilaterally slow that acceleration. And today, the world lacks the technical and governance tools to deliberately pace frontier-wide progress.

We request that the U.S. government support an international effort to develop the technical and governance tools needed to deliberately pace the frontier of automated AI development.”

However, Runaway AI is just one of the existential crises capable of causing human extinction or civilizational collapse in the 26-dimensional PolyCrisis caused by Planet A, the current Operating System of human civilization.  According to the Planetary Health Check Report of 2025, at least two other existential crises may have already gone beyond the point of no return. In other words, humanity may already be the walking dead, now concerned about yet another knife with which we will stab our corpse.

Planet A and Its PolyCrisis

The PolyCrisis itself is a predictable consequence of unlimited extraction and hoarding, a defining feature of Planet A. Besides Runaway AI, there are 15 other distinct ways in which humanity is already documented in peer-reviewed academic papers to be going down the proverbial tubes, while claiming to be the most intelligent and all-round superior species on Earth.

My good friend and colleague, Marlene Watson-Tara, uses the analogy of people worried about the dust in corner of the room when the house is on fire. It is not the pacing of AI SuperIntelligence (ASI) development that should be of utmost concern, but the Operating System in which AI is being developed and deployed. Planet A + AI is a lethal mixture, configured to cause near-term human extinction, no matter how AI’s development is paced. But in addition to Runaway AI, here are a few other ways in which Planet A’s PolyCrisis can kill us all off:

a) The animal agriculture industry’s intention to convert the entire animal biomass of our planet into a vast monoculture of humans and factory-farmed animals is also certain to cause near-term human extinction. We may have already crossed the point of no return on the loss of biodiversity, but we won’t know until we try to restore the planet’s life-support systems.

b) The continued emission of several hundred billion tons of chemical/plastic pollution into the environment while chopping down pollution-absorbing trees over millions of acres of land annually is also dead certain to cause near-term human extinction. We may have already crossed the point of no return on the chemical/plastic pollution of our planet, but we won’t know until we try to clean up this mess and restore the planet’s life-support systems.

c) The continued production of ten times as much animal manure as all the wild animals produced in the world 10,000 years ago is also likely to cause near-term human extinction. Producing so much excess manure causes a major disruption in the life-sustaining Nitrogen cycle of the planet. In a radio interview, the energy systems specialist, Vaclav Smil said,

“People are now freaking out about our disruption of the Carbon cycle of the planet. Just wait till they find out what we have done with the Nitrogen cycle.”

d) Indoctrinating people in the seven foundational myths of Planet A through the education system so that they have maladaptive worldviews, while arming them with increasingly powerful technological tools is also likely to cause near-term human extinction.

Taking a Holistic Perspective

From a systems engineering perspective, simple tweaks within Planet A will not suffice. As Ava Duvernay has documented, nearly two centuries after the prohibition of slavery, we are still battling Slavery 2.0, a concealed version of the same enslavement practices. This is because exploitation of “the other” is a systemic issue on Planet A, and such systemic issues require systemic solutions, not parametric tweaks.

If we simply tweak a system’s parameters, time constants or components without changing its goals and constraint sets, we are guaranteed to get the same end result: more exploitation, more concealed exploitation if opposition exists, and human extinction as the human enterprise has ballooned well beyond the limits of the planet. This is Systems Engineering 101.

It is also futile to tackle each dimension of the PolyCrisis one by one, since we would not be addressing the root cause. Our only choice is to go upstream and replace Planet A, the Operating System of human civilization and its extract-and-hoard objective function, with Planet B, a new Operating System for human civilization with its restore-and-heal objective function. Considering the exponentially increasing chaos in the world, it is now ready for Planet B, a systemic PolySolution for the PolyCrisis Emergency we are facing today.

Let’s not delay and pave our road from hubris to humility with more exponentially increasing suffering. We can start by facing the truth about the root cause of the PolyCrisis on Planet A and collectively getting to work on the PolySolution of Planet B, while keeping the faith. There is no time to lose.
