Dear Climate Healers Family,
Two Steps Forward…
Think about it, we humans have done something absolutely amazing! We have actually heated up our entire planet and ended the Fifth Major Ice Age in the Earth’s history. Life had endured 34 million years of this Late Cenozoic ice age and now it is over.
This climate heating project began over 50,000 years ago when our ancestors migrated from Africa and went to every part of the world, armed with the technology of fire.
Ending the Fifth Major Ice Age can surely be viewed as the Greatest Accomplishment in Human History. It is really time for celebrations as we step into our newfound role as the caretaker species responsible for regulating the life support systems of the planet.
…One Step Back
In a retrograde step, President George H. W. Bush declared at the UN Rio Summit in 1992, “The American way of life is not negotiable” and essentially scuppered progress for all life on earth to enjoy the rewards of our 50,000 year long project.
Imagine, if instead, he had said, “The American ethos of liberty and justice for all is not negotiable.”
The United States along with the Vatican have still not ratified the UN Convention on Biological Diversity. Respectively, they form the cultural and spiritual impediments preventing humanity from fulfilling this critical responsibility on behalf of all life on Earth.
This lack of progress was aided with mass obfuscation in climate science. At the turn of the century, the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which is a political body regulating climate science, devised an inconsistent three-tiered system for measuring CO2 emissions from human sources:
1. Tier I CO2 molecules emitted from fossil fuel sources, which are counted in their entirety.
2. 70% discounted Tier II CO2 molecules emitted from land use change (deforestation) activities primarily from animal agricultural sources, and
3. 100% discounted Tier III CO2 molecules emitted mainly from animal agricultural sources, such as the respiration of farmed animals and pasture maintenance fires.
Inconsistent Accounting Leads to Inconsistent Facts
The problem with such inconsistent accounting is that it leads to inconsistent facts in the UN IPCC reports.
For instance, the UN IPCC’s Sixth Assessment report notes that land currently stores nearly three times as much carbon as the atmosphere and five times as much carbon as in all the fossil fuels we have burned to date, even though we have eliminated half the trees on the planet.
The same IPCC report states that land use change, mainly resulting from the loss of half the trees on the planet, has only contributed one-third of the CO2 emissions as fossil fuels since 1750. This implies that land use change contributed around fourteen times as much CO2 emissions prior to 1750 than since, which is inconsistent with the scientific literature. The current estimate is that land use change contributed twice as much CO2 emissions prior to 1750 than since, not fourteen times as much.
Besides, I doubt that any atmospheric climate scientist can point to any difference in the greenhouse effect of Tiers I, II and III CO2 molecules.
Evidently, politics won out over scientific integrity at the UN IPCC.
Only the Truth Will Prevail
Finally, after years of persistent effort, Gerard Bisshop has now published a paper in a top climate journal, Environmental Research Letters, showing that when the artificial distinction between Tier I and Tier II CO2 molecules is eliminated, land use change, primarily from deforestation, overtakes fossil fuels as the number one source of CO2 emissions from human causes since 1750. Please see figure above.
From the paper,
“This new insight has the potential to empower renewed interest in restoring forests and adding impetus to the many programs aimed at forest protection.
Gross accounting also exposes the enormity of drawdown, amounting to 76% of total carbon emissions since 1750 and 65% of carbon emissions for the decade to 2020. Forests (and the lack of them) therefore play a defining role in both disturbing and moderating Earth’s climate.”
Indeed, with consistent accounting of all CO2 emissions from human sources, we would not be downplaying the enormous role that forests play in annual drawdown. Then there won’t be alarmist news reports on the loss of forest carbon sinks as we are seeing these days.
I now urge the climate science community to reclaim its integrity and remove the artificial distinction between Tier I, Tier II and Tier III CO2 molecules in UN IPCC reports so that systems engineers have access to consistent CO2 emissions accounting by sector before developing solutions to the global ecological crisis.
Please recall that back in 2009, Goodland and Anhang had the foresight to include some Tier III CO2 molecules in their analysis of the greenhouse gas emissions contribution of animal agriculture and were shunned for it, with mainstream scientists preferring the dubious estimates from the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), masking the true facts.
Now, the UN FAO’s scientists themselves are exposing the industry pressure that they were put under. From this, it is clear that even the Climate Healers position paper vastly underestimated the greenhouse gas emissions contribution of animal agriculture.
The shoe is now well and truly on the other foot.
This proves that when we eliminate animal agriculture, go Vegan and rewild the planet (the Vegan Rewilding solution), we can indeed solve our ecological crisis and save the planet.
We are excited to host you for the Vegan Convergence Of the Peoples #19 (V-COP19) which will be conducted as a hybrid in-person/Zoom event.

A Call to Action
If this message has touched your heart and you want to act, then here are 3 easy steps YOU can take NOW to ACTUALLY make this happen:
1) Say out loud to yourself, THIS NEEDS TO HAPPEN! IF you really mean it, take the next two steps.
2) Write down the names of three people who will listen to you when you speak. Not that they are presupposed in any way, just that they will listen to you when you speak.
3) In the next 30 minutes, forward them this entire message with a simple personal statement that you think this needs to happen and you would like them to take these actions with you.
With much love,
Sailesh on behalf of the Climate Healers Core team.
