Dear Climate Healers Family,

Here’s the story. Something happened in the late ’90s at the United Nations which de-emphasized the top two environmental problems identified by the UN Environmental Program at the Rio Summit in 1992 – biodiversity loss and ecosystems collapse – and over-emphasized the third environmental problem, climate change. The Conferences of the Parties (COPs) of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) began meeting once every 2 years, while the COPs of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC) continued to meet every year.

This is why the UN just conducted the 16th Conferences, COP16 for CBD in Cali, Colombia Oct 21-Nov1, 2024, COP16 for UNCCD will be happening in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia from Dec 2-13, 2024, while the 29th Conference, COP29 for UNFCCC, Nov 11-22, 2024, just concluded in Baku, Azerbaijan last week.

Did the fact that animal agriculture is by far the leading cause of biodiversity loss and ecosystems collapse, while climate change is being portrayed as a “Green Growth” story – “change some light bulbs, install solar panels, drive electric cars and the problem is solved story” – have something to do with the differences in emphasis at the UN?

Not that the “Green Growth” story is even true. In order to portray climate change as a “Green Growth” story, a misleading emissions accounting convention had to be put in place at the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) to hide the true impact of animal agriculture. Nevertheless, for over a couple of decades, it worked like a charm and it made a few people a lot of money, as trillions were invested worldwide in this “Green Growth” story.

Now, the climate chickens are coming home to roost, literally. The intermingled nature and climate crisis has become so severe that it has been declared a global health emergency. Now, we have no choice but to closely examine this UN IPCC emissions accounting convention and ask questions like:
1) Was this accounting convention put in place to deliberately de-emphasize animal agriculture?
2) If so, who knew about it?
3) And if so, when did they know about it?

This is assuming that there should be accountability for the suffering of millions of climate refugees as well as the extinction of numerous species as these accounting conventions have misdirected public resources and misled the public for three decades.

Perhaps, there won’t be any such accountability just as there is no accountability for the scientists who wrote school textbooks telling children that meat is the only source of protein and dairy is the only source of calcium, thereby deceiving generations of people into consuming foods that made them chronically ill and causing them to die by the millions every year.

Accountability aside, we have to quickly correct course and solve our environmental problems with integrity or face the climate grim reaper ourselves. With that in mind, a group of six grandfathers have written an open letter to the Chair of the UN IPCC on this subject.

It is a technical letter intended for the scientists at the UN IPCC, but please read through it and let us know if you would like to endorse it.

2) Write down the names of three people who will listen to you when you speak. Not that they are presupposed in any way, just that they will listen to you when you speak.
3) In the next 30 minutes, forward them this entire message with a simple personal statement that you think this needs to happen and you would like them to take these actions with you.
