11 Sep The Planet B Chronicles: 11. How Living Systems Transform
“Change is inevitable, while transformation is intentional” – Tracey L. Martin.
Dear Climate Healers,
Through narrative lock-ins, institutional inertia and political/economic capture, big living systems resist fundamental change from within. The result is a socio-technical system architecture that is destroying the life-support systems of the planet, while failing to meet the basic needs of humanity despite procuring an abundance of resources for meeting those needs.
For instance, the food system on Planet A is the leading cause of planetary boundary transgressions, even as it fails to meet the calorific needs of nearly a billion human beings as well as the micro-nutrient needs of 95% of Americans, despite procuring six times as much food as humanity needs (by dry weight) from the planet.
How would we fix such destructive, wasteful systems?
Big living systems transform through a process called emergence. In their treatise on the Lifecycle of Emergence, systems scientists, Margaret Wheatley and Deborah Frieze, describe how emergence happens through networks.
Networks are how Life organizes itself. Self-organized networks are routinely used by living beings to mutually nourish and support themselves.
Put simply, system transformations begin as separate local actions, which get networked into communities of practice, and finally emerge as a new system with real power and influence.
Imagine that we wish to transform our food system so that it is optimized to meet the nutritional needs of all 8 billion human beings, instead of being optimized to meet the luxurious indulgences of billionaires.
Multiple groups begin to consume nutritious whole-foods plant-based meals around the world instead of the Standard American Diet (SAD) promoted by the mainstream media. These groups network with each other to help overcome common deficiencies, e.g., Vitamin B12, which arises mainly because humans wash their food before eating and therefore don’t consume soil directly.
Finally, at the right Eureka moment, a new system founded on preventive health care and whole planet healing will emerge organically almost everywhere. Please stay tuned.
Join us at V-COP23
Please join us in Toronto for the Vegan Convergence Of the Peoples #23 (V-COP23) on Nov 1-2 to help shape and implement our system design plan for Planet B. The theme for V-COP23 is offered by our co-host, Plant Based Treaty: Redirect, Relinquish, Restore::
Redirect our focus from fixing Planet A to building Planet B.
Relinquish the excess resources we have taken from the planet.
Restore the life-support systems of the planet with the relinquished resources.
Please be there and let us make some history.
With much love,
Let’s work together, and work fast, or by 2026 it will be too late. The damage done will be irreversible. We can do it.
