07 Sep The Planet B Chronicles: 7. It’s a Wonderful Life
“Every time a bell rings, an angel gets his wings” – Zuzu Bailey.
Dear Climate Healers,
On Christmas Eve 2024, in Bedford Falls, New York, Georgia Bailey contemplates suicide. She is convinced that humans don’t belong on Earth and that animals would be better off if all humans disappeared off the face of the Earth. The prayers of her family and animal friends reach Heaven, where guardian angel second class Clarence Odbody is assigned to save Georgia and earn his wings.
Clarence is shown flashbacks of Georgia’s life. He watches 12-year-old Georgia rescue a cow from slaughter and start an animal sanctuary. School children visit the animal sanctuary and that changes the character of the town. Georgia later saves the chef, Mr. Gower from accidentally poisoning an allergic customer.
In 2016, Georgia plans a world tour before college. She is reintroduced to Jim Hatch, who has loved her since childhood. When her father dies from a stroke, Georgia postpones her travel to run the family business, Bailey’s Diner.
Avaricious banker Henry F. Potter, who owns most of the town, seeks to take over Bailey’s Diner, but Georgia refuses to sell it to him. She changes it to a vegan Diner and works alongside her uncle Billy, using her tuition savings to make and sell plant-based meats and keep Bailey’s Diner afloat.
Georgia and Jim rekindle their relationship and marry, but abandon their honeymoon to use their savings to run Bailey’s Diner and the animal sanctuary.
Under Georgia, Bailey’s Diner flourishes. Potter entices Georgia to sell the Diner to him with a cash offer, but Georgia rebuffs him when she realizes that Potter’s true intention is to turn Bailey’s Diner into a butcher shop and send the animals in the sanctuary to slaughter.
Potter gets all the restaurants in Bedford Falls to offer vegan options on their menu. Now groups of people with a few vegans among them, who used to come to Bailey’s Diner, have other restaurants to go to, instead of just Bailey’s Diner.
Paradoxically, as the town becomes more vegan, Bailey’s Diner begins losing money. On Christmas Eve, Georgia and Jim are not able to pay the rent on the Diner and keep the animal sanctuary running. Georgia begs Potter for a bank loan to keep the lights on at the Diner.
Potter refuses. Georgia offers the family jewelry as collateral. Potter laughs at her and says the jewels are worthless. He vows to take over the Diner and send all the animals in the sanctuary to slaughter.
Georgia flees Potter’s office. Contemplating suicide, she goes to a bridge. Before Georgia can jump, Clarence dives into the river and Georgia rescues him. When Georgia wishes she had never been born and the world would be better off without humans, Clarence takes her into an alternate timeline in which she never existed. Georgia finds that Bedford Falls is now Pottersville, an unsavory town occupied by sleazy entertainment venues and callous people. The cow was not rescued and the animal sanctuary never got started. The school children never saw farm animals in the sanctuary and no one in Bedford Falls went vegan.
Mr. Gower was jailed for manslaughter because Georgia did not stop him from poisoning the customer. Bailey’s Diner is now a butcher shop,
Then, Clarence shows Georgia what would happen if all humans disappeared off the face of the Earth. The lights are all out in Bedford Falls as there is no one to run the power plants. Without fossil fuels being burnt, the sulfur aerosols disappear from the atmosphere and the Earth heats up.
As the Earth heats up, the forests burn and the Earth heats up even more. The wild animals die out.
Georgia races back to the bridge and begs Clarence for her life and for humans back. Her wish granted, she rushes home to find that Jim and Billy have rallied the townspeople, who donate more than enough to keep Bailey’s Diner and the animal sanctuary afloat.
Georgia is toasted as “the savior of the town.” Everyone in town has signed up for Veganuary to help the planet and make Bedford Falls become the first Vegan town in the world for at least a month. Even Potter has signed up for Veganuary as he doesn’t want to be the odd man out. Among the donations, Georgia finds a copy of The World Peace Diet, a gift from Clarence inscribed: “Remember, no one is a failure who has friends. Thanks for the wings!” When a bell on the Christmas tree rings, Georgia’s youngest sister, Zuzu, explains that, “every time a bell rings, an angel gets his wings”.
Join us at V-COP23
Please join us in Toronto for the Vegan Convergence Of the Peoples #23 (V-COP23) on Nov 1-2 to help shape and implement our system design plan for Planet B. The theme for V-COP23 is offered by our co-host, Plant Based Treaty: Redirect, Relinquish, Restore::
Redirect our focus from fixing Planet A to building Planet B.
Relinquish the excess resources we have taken from the planet.
Restore the life-support systems of the planet with the relinquished resources.
Please be there and let us make some history.
With much love,
Let’s work together, and work fast, or by 2026 it will be too late. The damage done will be irreversible. We can do it.
