Following the global celebration of World Food Healers day, we didn’t want to wait until November 2023 for the next World Food Healers day. After all, in an ideal world, every day would be World Food Healers day and perhaps, we might have a World Food Indulgence day once a year to remind ourselves of how chronically ill we were when we weren’t eating right.

Indeed, why should we continue to tolerate a food system that inadequately nourishes much of the world’s population routinely, even though it is extracting six times as much food as we need from the planet? With that in mind and knowing that we couldn’t get a proclamation on World Food Healers day, Nov 19, 2022, from the Mayor of New York because the request was not received on time, we submitted a new proclamation request for Sunday, Dec 18, 2022.

And would you believe it, the Mayor’s office responded positively! Here’s the email I received this morning:

“Good afternoon, Sailesh,

Thank you for submitting your request to the New York City Mayor’s Office. We would be happy to provide a Mayoral proclamation for World Food Healers Day Food Giveaway on December 18th. Would you mind forwarding us the flyer or invite for our records? Thank you.

One of my colleagues will be in touch when the proclamation is ready to provide you with instructions for pickup.

If I can be of any further assistance, please let me know. Your reference number is 1007920. We wish you a wonderful event.”

Here’s the text of the Proclamation request we submitted:

“Proclamation
By Eric L. Adams, Mayor
World Food Healers Day
December 18, 2022

WHEREAS, the EAT Lancet commission declared that because much of the world’s population is inadequately nourished and many environmental systems and processes are pushed beyond safe boundaries by food production, a global transformation of the food system is urgently needed, and

WHEREAS, the United Nations Environmental Program declared that a global shift toward a vegan diet could help save the world from devastating hunger, widespread fuel shortages, and catastrophic climate change, and

WHEREAS, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics declared that appropriately planned vegan diets are healthful for all life cycle stages, including pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood, and adolescence, and declared that vegan diets are associated with lower blood cholesterol, lower risk of heart disease, lower risk of hypertension and type 2 diabetes, lower body mass index, and lower overall cancer rates, and

WHEREAS, New York City has led the way in making healthy, whole-foods plant-based Universal vegan meals easily available to every patient in a hospital within the city, and

WHEREAS, World Food Healers day calls for global community efforts to make healthy, whole-foods plant-based Universal vegan meals freely available to every human being on the planet, regardless of economic or ethnic background,

THEREFORE, I, Eric L. Adams, Mayor of the City of New York, do hereby proclaim the third Sunday of every month as “WORLD FOOD HEALERS DAY” in New York City, and do urge every resident to join in the observance.

In return, for his courage in signing this proclamation, I hereby proclaim Mayor Eric L. Adams to be a Planetary Superhero among political leaders. He has truly mastered the art of leaning into what is right.
