04 Jun The Race Between Education and Catastrophe
“History is a race between education and catastrophe” – H. G. Wells.
Dear Climate Healer,
The 1972 UN Conference on the Environment in Stockholm, Sweden, was the first global conference to make the environment a major issue. On the 50th anniversary of the Stockholm conference, We Don’t Have Time, a review platform for climate solutions, is organizing a series of events to highlight the urgency of environmental action that is needed today.
However, on Land Use day, Jun 2, there was considerable tiptoeing around the Cow in the Room, though during the break, Veganism was brought up and quickly dismissed as “extreme” and unnecessary. This gave the impression that though the platform is called, “We Don’t Have Time,” its participants secretly believe that we do have plenty of time.
This reminds me of the fire we had in our Colts Neck house in Oct. 1993. When the fire started, our children came out of the play room above the garage and told me that there was smoke coming out of the vents. Since it was a new home and the gas heater had just kicked in for the first time, I told them not to worry about it and go back to play.
I was on the phone with a colleague discussing the new Digital Subscriber Loop (DSL) protocols for the internet.
I was busy. I was distracted.
It was only when the phone went dead that I realized my children’s warnings were serious. Then I rushed down to the garage to discover the new car I had bought the previous evening was on fire and spitting flames at me. It was only then that I hit the fire alarm and got us all out of the house to safety.
Fast forward nearly three decades and our children and grandchildren are warning us that our planet is on fire and that as a generation, we need to take responsibility for putting out the flames and rebuilding our planetary home. But we are distracted with holding on to our stock gains or with the latest news on the latest orgy of violence to take serious action on Greta’s warnings on the climate or our grand children’s pleas to stop killing their animal relatives.
As a generation, we are in the unique position of being the first generation to have largely acknowledged that human beings are changing the climate and destroying the biosphere of the planet and the last generation that can stabilize the climate and regenerate the biosphere for our children and grandchildren.
If we don’t reverse our present destructive course within the next few years, then it will be too late for future generations to undo the exponential Karmic blowback that Mother Nature is unleashing in front of our eyes.
Let’s not wait for our phones to go dead before we get serious, because in this case, there is no getting away from our home to safety.
There is no Planet B.
But there is a way out and it calls for us to address the Cow in the Room with integrity. And that’s precisely what the Government of India is stepping up to do.
Last Friday, I was tapped to be a Keynote speaker for a confluence of university Vice-Chancellors and state Cabinet Ministers in Coimbatore, India, Jul 13-16, all vying to host the world’s first University of Sustainability founded on a blend of the ancient principles of Yoga and Ahimsa with modern compassionate Science. To top it all, the organizers will be honoring our granddaughter, for demanding that I do my job and create a Vegan world for her by 2026.
Please stay tuned for more details. Meanwhile, please don’t hesitate to join us. Let’s make this greatest transformation in human history happen sooner rather than later.
Eat plants.
Plant trees.
Love animals.
Heal the planet.
It’s that simple.
All the best,
Sailesh Rao on behalf of Vega, Cow and Climate Healer and the Climate Healers team.
