Dear Climate Healers,

Today, Chris Delforce, producer of the documentary, Dominion, and founder of the Farm Transparency Project, released a map of the animal factory farms swamping the globe. He said,

“This is more than just a map – it’s knowledge. We believe that knowledge is the most powerful asset available for preventing and relieving the suffering of animals. Through knowledge, consumers are able to form independent opinions, and are able to act. Beyond the individual, it allows us as a society to have informed conversations about commercialized animal cruelty.”

Using publicly available information, such as directories, databases and reports, as well as the knowledge and expertise of generations of animal advocates, the map identifies the locations of businesses which are engaging in industrial animal farming, including piggeries, poultry and egg farms, feedlots, dairies, slaughterhouses, rendering plants and sale yards, as well as breeding, research and entertainment facilities.

This map puts the lie to the common deception that most people only buy their meat, dairy and eggs from small-scale, sustainable organic farms. In reality, 99% of the animals in the US, 85% in the UK and 60-90% in the EU, are raised in factory farms.

While such deception is rife on Planet A, Planet B adopts honesty and transparency as a core value so that all production systems are open source and auditable for ecological footprint assessments. The restoration of the life-support systems of the planet has a strong engineering component to it, and in my experience, engineering projects are rarely successful without honesty and transparency consciously embedded in their processes.
